Oulton Park, the third round of the MCE British Superbike Championship. The bikes were prepared and in mint condition, however, still not complete with al their racing parts, but it wasn’t going to stop us all giving 110%.
During the Saturday, 5th May, it was a wet day and the first time visiting Oulton Park on a 600cc machine. Kurt and Matthew have only visited their circuit once before several years ago. We found the wet practice good and had a steady start, but in Qualifying, Matt #99 crashed out and was not able to gain a qualifying place for the Monday race. Kurt #66, however, qualified although struggling with chassis set up and lack of top end speed has hampered our efforts up until now.
Kurt had a good start and managed to keep the front end down and was battling throughout the race race with another two riders. Unfortunately, with only 4 laps to go he experienced a tank slap which he could not straighten out after his front wheel lifted over one of the crests in the track after exiting Druids. He slid so far on track that he tested how good his excellent X-Lite helmet and awesome Held leathers and gloves stood up to their jobs as he got up and walked away from this high speed off.
Mr. Hilton, the Head of the Black Country UTC spent the weekend with the team to get a first hand experience of the Technical Engineering required in running a race team who thought that the racing experience and Engineering mindset the students are gaining is fantastic. All of the students are beginning to understand their roles more competently and are all working as a team which is also great to see.
The students have designed on CAD components for the bikes which have now been made on the 3D rapid proto type machine. Check out the Facebook pages of BlackCountryUTCRacing to see the new components. The next step will be to transfer these designs into aluminium CNC components once the jigs have been designed to hold the jobs in place during manufacture.
You can also see how the new website at www.wigleyracing.com turns out as it is being updated , also join us on Facebook at Wigleyracing and come and stop by to meet the team on race weekends.
We would like to thank all of our sponsors of this project which keep it running and a big thanks to all the Marshalls at trackside – without you all it does not happen. Thanks.
