Following on from the promising third place in the ACU National 600 Endurance Championships at Oulton Park the Sorrymate.com pairing of Warren Verwey and Colin Norris were eagerly anticipating the Anglesey round.
The boys had done a track day to re familiarise themselves with the fantastic and technical circuit and also to test tyres, finding the most suitable compound and pressures for the excellent Continental Race Attack slicks would be vital on race day. With advice from Stefan at Tyres for Bikes both riders selected a soft front and medium rear as the best combination for wear and grip on the notoriously abrasive circuit.
Arriving at the circuit late on Thursday night the guys were pleasantly surprised to find the garage open so took the opportunity to set up before turning in for the night.
Friday test day was dry but the wind speed was high, limiting speeds along the long curving back section. Lap times were a little down on expectations but the tyres were performing well. In addition Colin was trying the new EBC ”HH” race brake pads for the first time. Feel and stopping power proved to be exceptional and the wear rate also good. The pads will need to last the full distance of the endurance race without fading.
Saturday dawned and the weather was glorious, clear blue skies and no wind. Team manager and sponsor Fergus from Sorrymate.com arrived to organise the garage and after the compulsory rider’s briefing came the qualifying sessions. Warren was out first for his 15 minute session then, following a delay with Warren being held in Parc Ferme for a noise test the transponder was changed over and it was Colin’s turn. Times were good but not brilliant, 9th overall and 4th in class. Good enough, game on.
The Endurance race was after lunch and it was Colin to make the traditional “Le Mans” run across the track and jump on the bike style start. The pack was cleanly away at a frantic pace, the top 4 600’s mixing it with the 1000cc class runners. Colin set personal best laps time and again and by the first change over the Sorrymate team were up to 3rd place. Immaculate pit work from Fergus and his team and Warren was straight out to continue the fray. Warren did a great job, again setting personal best times and closing the gap on second place team Power Projects Racing. Another slick pitstop and Colin was out again, pushing hard he passed Richie Cunningham (Power Projects Racing) for second place.
Warren went out for his final session and worked hard to close the gap on front runners the father and son team “Triumphs over Adversity”. Olly was watching the ride time very closely, strategy here was vital to give Colin the best chance of holding position during the final session. Taking no chances Colin had elected to fit a new rear tyre, the old one still looked good but he knew this was going to be a fight to the flag. The final perfect pit stop and Colin went out with a 15 second lead. This was not to last, good pit boarding from Sarah told Colin the lead was slowly evaporating, Triumphs over Adversity were catching, and back in 3rd place Power Projects were closing even faster on the leaders. Colin hung on still posting good laps whilst trying not to take any chances and took the chequered flag 5 seconds ahead of Triumphs who were in turn only 3 seconds in front of the charging Power Projects Racing.
A truly fantastic race, with the best possible result. The team celebrated with a meal “al fresco” (that’s outside the caravan) and a trip to the bar.
Sunday dawned, again the weather was good. Colin entered the Moto Grande 600 and Moto Solo Allcomers races while Warren went in the Moto Grande 1000 and Moto Solo alongside Colin.
Warren had a great time on his BMW1000RR with 11th place in both Moto Grande races and a 5th in th Moto Solo while Colin finished off the weekend with a 5th and a 4th in the Moto Grande 600 and a 4th and 3rd in the Moto Solo on his trusty R6.
All in all a great weekend’s racing, the riders would like to thank their sponsors, Sorrymate.com, Tyres4Bikes, EBC Brake Pads and all our friends and family who came along to help and support us.
Join us at the next round, with Hottrax Motorsport at Donington Park on Sunday 9th June.
