MaxGear Race Report – 26/03/14

The multi sport season is under way and I am happy with the positive start. Oulton park motor racing circuit provides an excellent venue for an event and a great circuit to race. The standard distance event consisted of 2 laps of running 8.6km and then 9 laps on the bike 39km with a final 1 lap run of 4.3km.

The race started at a steady tempo and a small group of 5 athletes including myself had broken away. As we completed the first lap the group had split into 4 and a trailing athlete. As we hit the headwind up the climb the group of 4 split into 2 pairs and unfortunately I was in the second pair, the 2 leaders started to move away.

With this being the season opener and in blustery conditions I wanted to maintain threshold to ensure that I could put together a strong performance on the bike leg which would determine my overall result. I chased the leaders on the opening laps of the bike and eventually caught second place with a lap to go. we raced over the final lap and into transition for the second run. The leader at this point was away so the fight was for a podium.

I ran hard out of transition and suffered from slight twinges of cramp for the opening km, this was the point where I had to settle for third place as I could not respond to the athlete who was running strongly in second place. Knowing that I was unable to catch and was not being caught i aimed for a consistent, even paced run to finish strongly.

My goal coming into the event was a strong endurance based performance, without any real weakness for this time of the year. secondary to this I wanted to be competitive at the head of the race aiming for a minimum of top 5, so to come away with a podium against some strong athletes I am happy and look forward to making further progress as we move into the season.

Thanks again to all of the team and sponsors for their continued support.
