For the bank holiday weekend we were at Oulton Park for round three of the season where we got off to a quick start after being there for the official BSB test the previous week. We both had bits and pieces to work on during the practice session on Saturday including the bike set-up and our performance.
Qualifying one was meant to be the only dry session we had to qualify for the grid and as Saturday afternoon approached it began raining meaning that we only had the beginning couple of laps to piece together a strong lap time. We decided to go for dry tyres for both of the bikes and went out for the session knowing we only had a handful of laps before the rain got too heavy. Unfortunately Kurt had a stroke of bad luck as he first of all missed the chicane taking to the grass before crashing out when braking at the end of the back straight due to the slippery surface; however, he remained in 27th at the end of Q1. Matt managed to have a good run and ended the session on a high in 14th place.
Sundays Q2 didn’t go to plan as the forecast predicted rain all day but by dinnertime the sun was out and the track had dried up leaving a blank slate for qualifying. We both continued to improve our lap times throughout the session but overall losing a few places each putting us back to 20th for Matt and 30th for Kurt leaving him with a lot of work for Mondays race.
We both had a great start to the race with Matt immediately jumping up to 16th by the end of the first lap. Kurt ran off the circuit during the first couple of laps putting him back a few places but once he got into a rhythm he managed to work his way up through the pack setting his new personal best lap time which was a second faster than qualifying and completed the race in 23rd. Matt on the other hand had his stroke of bad luck for the weekend during the beginning stages of the race and dropped back to 22nd by the end as he had difficulties with his contact lenses.
