It was a sunny start to the Cadwell Park weekend and the Sorrymate.com team were enthusiastic to see how the race meeting would pan out. The riders and Mike Dickinson, the team coach, had an early start to Friday with a 5:30am track walk in order to get a plan of attack for the morning practice session.
The practice session didn’t go as we had hoped with a few mechanical issues resulting in an early finish to the session. Matt suffered with a broken gear leaver and Kurt had difficulties with the clutch forcing him to retire from the session when it burnt out. The whole team worked hard getting the Sorrymate.com Yamahas ready for qualifying 1. It was a tense start to the session as Matt was struggling to put together a perfect lap and Kurt continued to encounter mechanical issues with his machine. It was time for a pit stop to regather thoughts and fine tune the setup. During the second stint of the session Matt was drawn into a race with some other competitors pulling him up the field into 25th, however, Kurt retired from the session also after his bike overheated and drained the water out of the radiator.
Saturday’s qualifying 2 was baking hot. We had a good start to the session with both riders getting straight back up to qualifying speed ready to chip away as the session progressed. They went out on old rubber for the initial stages whilst they worked on a few pointers from the previous night’s track walk and debrief. The riders pitted mid-session for a quick tyre change ready to put down some flying laps. Matt managed to find some clear track and set a new personal best by six tenths of a second putting him in 23rd. Despite the unfortunate start to the weekend, Kurt also managed to set his personal best leaving him in 29th for Sunday’s race.
